Portugal assumed the Presidency of the European Union in the first half of 2021 and in a context marked by profound challenges mainly generated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and which greatly impacted on the working methods adopted.

It was undoubtedly a greener and strongly digital Presidency which, despite making it impossible to hold most events in a face-to-face format, simultaneously made it possible to bring together virtually and on several occasions’ participants from various geographies, which would otherwise not have been possible in such a short space of time.

The Portuguese Presidency's performance in the area of Home Affairs has been dynamic and innovative and has had the merit of enabling the European Union to make progress on files considered essential for the implementation of a holistic and positive approach to migration, for strengthening the resilience of our societies and for the promotion of a safe Europe, which increasingly relies on a preventive approach.
