The Deputy Minister for Home Affairs, Antero Luís,
welcomed, on the 26 April, the President of the International Committee of the
Red Cross, Peter Maurer.
The hearing, held in the context of a visit to
Portugal by the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross, offered
an opportunity to assess and deepen cooperation ties between Portugal and the
Red Cross, with particular emphasis on areas such as the protection of human
rights, support for vulnerable persons and humanitarian action.
In its current capacity as leader of the Presidency
of the Council of the European Union, Portugal also took the opportunity to
address, in a more detailed manner, the work that has been developed around the
negotiation of the European Pact on Migration and Asylum, living up to the humanist
nature of national policy on combating illegal immigration and trafficking in
human beings, encouraging legal immigration as well as cooperation with
countries of origin and transit.
