The European Parliament approved on 28 April
2021 the Regulation providing for the removal of extremist content and the
dissemination of hate speech online. The aim of the measure is to enable and
promote a more effective fight against radicalisation and against terrorist and
extremist networks and organisations, which have been strengthening their
dissemination, disinformation and recruitment activities through the Internet.
The legal text provides that each Member State
shall designate an authority responsible for identifying the content to be
removed and for notifying the responsible companies and platforms to remove or
block the content within one hour.
The European Parliament's approval comes after
the Council, under the Portuguese Presidency, adopted its position on 16 March.
The Regulation will enter into force on the twentieth day following that of its
publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
