Towards a holistic management of migratory flows - Portuguese Presidency promotes dialogue between EU and African partners

The Ministerial Conference on the Management of Migratory Flows took place on 11 May, promoted by the Ministry for Home Affairs, in the framework of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Following the joint meeting of EU Ministers of Interior/Home and Foreign Affairs on the external dimension of migration held in March, the Conference brought together Ministers for Home Affairs of the EU Member States and Ministers and representatives from Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Senegal and Tunisia.

It was attended by the European Commission Vice-President, Mr. Margaritis Schinas, the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Mrs. Ylva Johansson, and the African Union Commissioner for Social Affairs, Mrs. Amira Elfadil.

Representatives of the Khartoum Process, FRONTEX, EASO, but also UNHCR, IOM and ICMPD also joined the meeting.

The initiative, welcomed by all participants, demonstrated the agreement between the European Union and the African partners on the importance of a comprehensive cooperation to promote legal migration mechanisms, the fight against criminal networks of trafficking in human beings and smuggling of migrants and also integrating development cooperation in response to the challenges of the root causes of irregular migration.
