PPEU and European Parliament reach provisional agreement on ETIAS
The Portuguese Presidency and the European Parliament provisionally agreed on the rules linking the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) with relevant EU databases (such as the Schengen Information System, Visa Information System, Entry/Exit System, Eurodac and the database on criminal records of third country nationals, as well as Europol and Interpol data).

The ETIAS, foreseen to be operational by 2022, aims to improve internal security, prevent illegal immigration, protect public health and reduce border delays by identifying individuals who somehow may pose a risk on arrival at external borders.
In order to complete the legislative process, the agreed texts will now be submitted to the relevant Council and Parliament bodies for political endorsement and then subsequent formal adoption.
